Ricky Gutierrez presents a compelling series of collages compiled of family artifacts that illuminate relationships between the inner personal world and the community. His body of work examines the family structure; exploring ideas of cultural longevity, and the complex intermingling of the grieving process with an optimistic outlook of the future. The collages also draw inspiration from observing diverse support systems throughout Ricky’s ongoing experience working with youth. “How it feels to be 8” highlights the infinitude of memory and the preservative nature of storytelling; outlining a quest for understanding and peace through growth, change, and self discovery.
